End of the Year Special: The UN Goes After Your Kids
This has been a hell of a year for the UN. I have expressed outrage over this useless, bloated bureaucracy numerous times over the course of the year, as they have done nothing but embarrass themselves and flaunt their ridiculous budget while calling for global collectivism and advocating for a punishment of those evil industrialized nations for their rampant consumerism. There is very little about the United Nations that doesn’t piss me off to no end.
Yet, they continue to outdo themselves, and I fear that this time they have gone too far. I just hope that I’m not the only one, because they’re treading in really disturbing territory now: your children.
As if the omnipresent liberal influence and indoctrination of the children in public schools isn’t bad enough, the United nations now wants a piece of that action. The UN is joining up with Marvel Comics to put out a comic line that features familiar Marvel superheroes working with the UN. From the Financial Times:
“The comic, initially to be distributed free to 1m US schoolchildren, will be set in a war-torn fictional country and feature superheroes such as Spider-Man working with UN agencies such as Unicef and the “blue hats”, the UN peacekeepers.”
Uh huh. While the asinine premise bothers me to no end, the aspect of the story that really got my attention was this line:
“…initially to be distributed free to 1m US schoolchildren…”
No eff’n way! They are going to be spreading the gospel of the UN, in Marvel superhero fashion, to one million US schoolchildren? Personally, I see this as a bad thing. We should not be allowing for an increased level of liberal “globalist” indoctrination of schoolchildren. If anybody can explain to me how this is in the least bit objective in nature, I would be very surprised. This is second only to showing Al Gore’s work of fiction in schools and passing it off as fact.
To further add to the audacity of this, the premise is being compared to the original “politicization” of Marvel superheroes back in World War II. While the goal of the WW2 comics was to help inspire people and build morale during the darker days of the war in Europe, the UN’s goal is different. Much different. And certainly more ominous:
“The UN’s goals are somewhat different: according to its website, it hopes the comics will teach children the value of international co- operation and sensitise them to the problems faced in other parts of the world. “
No. Absolutely unacceptable. Schoolchildren do not need to be “sensitized” to problems faced in other parts of the world (global warming?). They should be taught about the problems facing us here at home. They should not learn the “value of international cooperation.” They should learn the value of sovereignty and national pride.
Is this the sort of thing that we want invading our schools? I don’t know the details yet, but I would believe that there is little likelihood of parents having any say in this matter. The schools, the government and now the UN are running the show. How long will this be allowed to continue?

Hmmm… that gives me an idea.

This is getting ridiculous, it’s bad enough that the US government is slowly trying to take away paren’t rights and indoctrinate children into liberalism, now the UN has to get in on the idea? The UN is really beginning to overstep their bounds now. Coming in and trying to teach OUR children, what right do they have? How have we let them get this powerful?
To go off topic here, just slightly though, have you seen the movie “Happy Feet”? It starts off as a cute movie about a young penquin trying to fit in, then it gradually turns into a movie about BIG OIL destroying the environment. At the end the UN comes in and saves the day. Hollywood advance two agenda with that piece of crap. BIG OIL, and promoting the UN.
So the UN has already been introduced to our children and shown in a good light, and now we have this.
Great!

I saw the movie Happy Feet. It starts off cute and the second half is sickening for many reasons. It was a waste of money.
As for this, I quit buying comic books for a while. Involving the UN into comic books is just sad. Distributing that into the public schools just builds the case for homeschooling, parochial schools, private schools and just doing away with the lost cause of public schools.

Back in the 90’s, I think, the Avengers fell under the authority of the UN, and that was ridiculous enough …
But I heard that Marvel killed Captain America, so it’s pretty hard to respect the whole universe anymore.
I just deleted another three paragraphs that made me sound even more geeky than I meant to …
As to your larger point — I’m okay with international cooperation. But you’re right, people can cooperate without surrendering sovereignty. The Allies of WWII never thought to become one great big nation, but they fought together, and sometimes even had units under joint command. Ultimately, though, we still had the British, the Americans, the Canadians, the Australians, the French, and the Soviets — not the United Allied Powers.

On another, geeky note … what kind of needle does one have to use to tattoo the Hulk, anyway?

The U.N. is feeling their influence and importance starting to slip. This is a grapple for any shred of power and rule they assumed that they held. Get rid of them now while they are down and weak. Like unions, they are dinosaurs whose time has passed and now just pull everything connected to it down. We get along just fine with our worldly neighbours. And some countries are meant to do better than others. It is a balance that the U.N. has been trying to level off forever. “At some point we have to stop throwing-up in the baby birds mouth.”-Hank Hill

Hey Arclight, I think you missed something to be pissed about in Wisconsin. An atheist group has sued the city of Green Bay because they didn’t like the nativity scene displayed.
I wonder though. Can the populace of a state create a class action lawsuit against the atheists who try and infringe on the right of expression of everyone else?
Either you toss out all those court cases or let them all through.

No matter what you do , you’re discriminating.
So you just ignore all these assholes who cant handle the concept of ” If you dont like it, you do have a choice ! Dont fucking buy it ! Or dont fucking look at it !)

Ugh. Thanks Arc for the tip on this one, as I managed to miss it.
A few “brief” comments:
1. Stan Lee was forced out of Marvel (and sued them) years ago. He has zero influence over what happens there anymore.
2. This is very unsurprising, given the way Marvel has gone over the past few years. They got highly political, and have made a mess of what had been created by their betters years ago. They just can’t go very long with out making some sort of over wrought, and painfully obvious political statement.
3. This concept is nothing new. It was used in the 40’s and 50’s to sell War Bonds, and up recruiting, in the 70’s to warn of the dangers of “hard drugs” (heroin and cocaine mainly), and sinc the 70’s to sell a variety of products from Hostess Snack Cakes to Matchbox Cars.
4. This is mainly about money (Marvel will get some huge liscensing fees from this), though the political aspect is in play (more so given the leanings of the current “editorial staff” at Marvel). Even so, it still ends up as crass propaganda.

wickle, don’t worry, we embrace geekiness here. It’s all good.
But you do bring up a good point. The allied powers worked together for a cause, but it wasn’t a cause that ever suggested a giant, globalist entity that steals from the “evil” rich (western industrialized nations) and gives to the poor (developing nations) so that everybody can be “equal.” If that were the case, we would have given the USSR the bomb so we could all be “fair.”
And BTW, killing off Captain America in when we are in this deep of a national funk and lacking in any sort of patriotism was just bad taste on the part of Marvel. It made me wonder if it was perceived as being too “Pro American” and they were worried about offending immigrants…
arclightzero said,
January 2, 2008 at 6:29 pm
Gary, don’t worry, I saw that and have been waiting to see what comes of it. The theory was that the city researched and the lawyers told them that since the Nativity scene was purchased with private money and not taxpayer-funded that it was not unconstitutional.
It pisses me off to no end, though, because they are wasting my tax dollars on something this asinine. I wonder how much taxpayer money is spent on these silly lawsuits?

Oh, and I would think that only a rub-on tattoo would work on the Hulk. Assuming you could get him to sit still long enough to rub it on… I had a hard enough time with Photoshop!
arclightzero said,

Deaconblue, you’re right, this is nothing new… But the prior use (except maybe the anti-drug campaign) was used to promote American interests… This promotion of globalization is absurd. Our kids are already getting inundated with negativity about America, so do we really need them being exposed to more anti-American global collectivist tripe? Frankly, it sickens me.
deaconblue said,
January 2, 2008 at 8:38 pm
Like I said, it’s mainly about the money. But it should also be noted that there has been a trend of this sort of sentiment at Marvel for a while now. The culmination of this was when they assassinated Captain America after a really over blown “superhero civil war.” One thing they did do “right” was the title of the issue where Cap bites it: “The Death of the Dream.” They kill off the one icon who represented everything America could and should be, and then tried to justify it by claiming he was “past his time” or “out of step with the country.” It was, and still is a travesty, one that was done not only for a political statement, but to try and boost falgging sales. This is a “win-win” for the ideological crusaders posing as writers and editors at Marvel. They get to reap some cash from the UN, support a specific “globalist” agenda, and get free access to potential new customers.
deaconblue said,

Dang, I missed the uber-geek question!
How do you tatoo the Hulk? Very carefully of course! OK, couldn’t resist.
But I do like the idea of Wolvie as a tatoo artist. Need something to fall back on if that superhero gig goes bust.

Ok, first off, I hate the UN and always have. That being said, sadly I do not take issue with them doing this in comic books. This premise has been around for many years (any other geeks remember when the X-Men tried to feed the poor in Africa?). While the UN does suck beyond belief and it would be great if our children weren’t pushed towards them in comic books, try picking one up. Most of the books out there are practically porn or snuff. If you want to be outraged at what is being indoctrinated into our children, be outraged at comic books in general.

You’re right, there’s a lot wrong with the UN, and in some cases, it has been more harmful to the goal of global stability than it has been helpful. But here I think you’re either exaggerating or simply making up stuff. The UN calls for keeping the peace and humanitarian measures, but I’ve never heard of the organization calling for “global collectivism.” You should either cite some sources or stop making ridiculous claims.

Collectivism is defined as:
Look at any of the so-called global warming “solutions” which are essentially nothing more than a de facto “robin hood” policy that takes from the industrialized western nations and redistributed wealth and technology to developing nations through things like the “global carbon tax.”
And an even more insidious example is the Law Of the Sea Treat (LOST) which puts the sea (and much of the shoreline) under UN jurisdiction and would also put all mineral rights and distribution there of under UN jurisdiction as well. They would capitalize on the technology and bank accounts of industrialized nations to develop and exploit undersea mineral and oil deposits but then they would claim the profits or raw material as their own and distribute them as they see fit.
You can read up more on LOST here:
http://arclightzero.wordpress.com/2007/10/29/lost-the-scariest-treaty-youve-never-heard-of/
I could go on and on. The UN does much more than “peacekeeping,” frivolous investigations and “condemnations,” and monitoring. If you look at the overall make up of the UN, the vast majority of member states are not necessarily “west-friendly” and are not what one would consider to be developed nations. Many of them would like nothing more than to even the global playing field a bit, which is best accomplished through global collectivism and managed by the UN.
