Betrayed!
What in the hell is going on in the Republican party? Whether locally or nationally, it seems that no matter which way I turn our GOP elected officials are going mad and turning against all things Conservative.
Is it simply that “win at all costs” illness that seems to be permeating the party these days, or is it something else? I would like to take these people by the shoulders and shake them until they give me a legitimate (and reasonable) answer, but I think I would be doing a whole lot of shaking and I just don’t have the time to devote to such fruitless pursuits. After all, our freedoms are going to hell in a hand basket, and I just couldn’t live with myself if I didn’t fight back.
But that doesn’t mean that I don’t still feel that pinch of betrayal whenever one of my elected Republican officials turns their back on principle and jumps on a nasty bandwagon, especially when you can tell that their political positions are based primarily on personal feelings or agendas. This is the sort of pathetic pandering that we have come to expect from the Democrats out there, but I have been severely disillusioned into thinking that the GOP was above that sort of thing. I guess I was wrong. I guess the will to win at all costs is too powerful to ignore.
Once again, this headache stems back to smoking bans, and despite the fact that my state Senator is a Republican (and has been known to be a decent enough Republican so far) she has decided to jump on the SS bandwagon and betray all of us who have given time, money and effort into her campaign. I’m sorry, but this is very revealing incident that sums up my last several weeks of GOP-critical posting into a microcosmic real-world example. Along with global warming, I am finding that smoking bans make for an outstanding litmus test as to somebody’s principles, and if they choose the agenda of personal politics and public opinion over the principles of limited government conservatism and personal liberties, I simply cannot see them as anything other than a turncoat.
Personally, I wish there were a way that we could fire these people (preferably out of a cannon, into the sun) and replace them with people who put principle first… But instead we’re stuck with them as they parade around their districts setting back our efforts to maintain at least the status quo on freedom and do more damage as they brainwash the masses. Damn if that isn’t hard to fight against when you’re just “little people” like us…
But fight we do, and once again I am going to beg and plead for support from you people out there. Anybody in Wisconsin who is willing to help, please let me (or Joey) know and we will hook you up with information… And as soon as we find a source of funding, we will be sending stickers, posters and other things to hand out to people around the state who are willing to spearhead their areas.
This may be a slap in the face to us, but at least we new know that we cannot even rely on our Republican legislators to help us out, so grassroots disruption is going to be the name of the game.

New Richmond? Ahhh…the memories. I remember playing a few hockey games out there, and IIRC it was the only arena I’ve ever played in that had chain-link fence instead of plexiglass. Please tell me they fixed that by now. lol

I wish I lived in Wisconsin to support you. How did we get in this situation where republicans can stomp on personal property rights in the name of popularism. What a joke. Pandering Pawlenty signed our law and also a moron global warming zealot. I’m going to a anti-global warming event at the St. Paul capital on Saturday for 12-2PM for any one who may want to go. Should be pretty cold.

Wish I could help Ryan.
Speaking of health insurance just wait, we think it is expensive now..wait until it is free from Big Brother!
The party has gone to h*ll in a hand basket. Unless there is a strong grass roots movement and ‘we the people rise up’ I fear for our liberties.

Hey you guys ever seen this…

Thought it was intersting. How many scientists does it take to debunk the alarmist attitude of just 1 Al Gore? It amazes me that he is able to light such a fire under a natural process that we have no control over. What’s even more humorous was that I was watching a show last night called “Global Warming?” and the title would suggest a objective view point but that was far from the case. It really showed that global warming exists..that’s not the funny part. They also showed a graph of the last 650 million years and the warming and cooling trends(supposedly to show that there really is such a thing as global warming). The last warming trend happened some X million years ago and what do you know…we had nothing to do with it or the 6 other times it has been shown to happen. As a matter of fact our current “warming trend” is happening at pretty much the same interval of the previous warming trends. Go figure…

mplsbob, if you can help in any way, please feel free. You don’t need to be a Wisconsin resident to want to push for freedom and rights. If you know anybody in Wisconsin, tell them to stop by the site or sign the petition.
As I recall, you and your wife go to Hudson to smoke… If you know anybody there or see any regulars, see if they want to get involved. Or if you want, I can give you some info to drop off at any of the places you go and smoke…
We’re just small fish out here and will accept any help, believe me!

NC and Angie, I am terrified of the thought of government health care. Any time the government invades my life, I get more and more uncomfortable. I fear what will happen if people continue to voluntarily concede their rights in the name of political correctness, public health or [the dreaded] greater good…

Micky, I know what you mean about feeling helpless. It can be very demoralizing sometimes. Seems like every time we take a step forward, we face a whole new series of obstacles…

Spawn, I saw that a while back, but it’s always good to bring it up again.
This sort of thing is absolute proof in the pudding that on “controversial” topics, science takes a distant back seat to pop culture and popular opinion. Al Gore has the backing of big money and pop culture, which means it doesn’t matter how many scientists you stack against him, he will still prevail so long as people can’t peel themselves away from the TV.

I think that they have put their finger to the air and think they sense the wind blowing against any kind of slowing of government growth. They don’t have the testicular fortitude to stand their ground, and argue for their positions, if they indeed can be assumed to have any positions or principles they won’t compromise in order to make themselves more electable.
Bottom line I don’t think the Republican Party is the party of small government anymore because the politicians themselves don’t believe their constituents would follow them in a charge against government. And so we have a Republican Congress (well we don’t have it anymore) that grew government to remarkable levels, and had earmarks flowing out the wazoo.

I agree with the sentiments that the Republican party has lost its fortitude to protect their constituents from losing more and more freedoms to big government.
For a real world example, look at any bill that Sen. McCain has authored. They are all for big government, increased spending and increased control of the American people.
If Sen. McCain gets the Republican nomination we can pretty much expect to see the differences between the Democrats and Republicans virtually disappear.
The real conservatives of the Republican Party, Ron Paul and Mitt Romney, stand a chance of resurrecting the party but the media won’t give them the time of day. At least Romney is able to get a word in at debates.
We definitely need a grass roots movement to let the upper echelons of the Republican party know that we are angry and we are not going to take any more of their nonsense.

Jesse, I agree. We need a good shakeup among the conservatives, and if the GOP doesn’t pay attention or care it’s time to leave them behind.
We can’t let the GOP drag us into this mess. If they want to go left, then so be it… It’s up to us to keep Conservatism alive though.
