What is wrong with Eau Claire?

Having used my legal rights as a Wisconsin citizen, I have been investigating the links and relationships between Smoke Free Wisconsin and area local governments. While the ties and incestuous nature is not relevant yet, what is of interest is an individual I ran into who’s smugness prompted further investigation.

While I have been putting together the bizarre pieces of the tobacco puzzle, Joey went off to find out what she could about Eau Claire city council member, Brandon Buchanan.

Turns out the Brandon is a 26-year old commie with a serious chip on his shoulder. Ok, maybe commie is a bit harsh to the reds since this guy makes Stalin look like a swell pal.

This is from his page at RunforOffice.org, a young leftist recruitment center:

I ran for city council to deny the opposition another seat on this council. I also ran for council because I want to run for higher office some day. The right wing spends billions of dollars recruiting and funding local candidates to institute regressive policies at the local level and build up a farm-team of local candidates to run for higher office. We as progressives must do the same. That means candidate training and fund raising connections. Also, jobs for young elected officials so we can pay bills while working full time politically.

Yikes!

So it makes us wonder… Just what is wrong with the city of Eau Claire to have elected this guy to office?

I guess maybe it’s because of the promise of happiness and prosperity for all?

With a more progressive council, we could mandate employers guarantee paid sick leave to all their employees — even part time workers.

Uh huh. I shudder in my little right-wing boots when I read things like that. Land of the free indeed.

While I started out working on putting together the smoking ban pieces, I am starting to wonder if the people of Eau Claire simply get what they deserve by electing idealistic young “progressive” (read: commie) people like Brandon here.

“to institute regressive policies at the local level” and then “With a more progressive council, we could mandate employers guarantee paid sick leave to all their employees…”
Oh yes that’s a good thing. The hypocrisy of the Left is just mind boggling.

    Two words: Term Limits

Its the only way I can see to keep career minded guys like this from becoming a more dangerous threat to personal liberty.

Have you ever stopped to think they (read:commies) think of you the exact same way? Just a different term or whatever the word of the day is for right-winger. As long as you have 2 sides with opposite agendas there will always be name calling and arguments. If the 2 sides are a given then what’s the point in the debate other than the constant power tug-o-war? Tiring if you ask me.

That’s really more of an observation than anything else.

Speaking of tobacco, I’ve noticed something odd recently where I live. Most of the farmers who were growing soybeans have switched over to corn and tobacco. I get the switch over to corn (ethanol and all), but switching to tobacco? I thought the crop was in decline thanks to the anti-smoking nazis.

Don’t you just love the way they use the term “regressive policies” to describe us? We are not enlightened enough to understand that they know what is best for us. We are simply backward thinking trolls, while they are holy gods who we should worship and thank for thier very being.

Oh yeah, I read somewhere the left was excoriating McCain over his joke about Iranians and cigarettes. HA!

Yea, maybe they would rather we send em some weed. Then they’ll just turn into a bunch of passive hippies and all of everyones worries will be over.

Let’s see, in your right wing philosophy, trying to give people paid sick leave and trying to protect them from the poisons in tobacco are a bad thing. I thought you guys were suposed to love your fellow men. Sounds more like you want to hurt them to me. Progressive philosophy is all about helping people and not letting powerful corporations take advantage of working people. It is not about taking away people’s rights. That is a lie put forth by the powerful right wing machine that is bankrolled by powerful corporations. Progressive means we believe in loving our neighbor as ourselves and being our brother’s keeper.

Ah, and interesting take. I see from your IP that you are at the Mayo Clinic, so you obviously put a lot of weight in what you are saying.

So I will answer things simply because I know there will be no changing your mind.

Paid sick leave: I believe in paid sick leave. It’s a good thing. People get sick and it’s usually due to no-fault of our own. As such, why should we be punished by our employer for being sick? Of course, that is something that must be handled between the employee and the employer… Not the government. Unless your employer is the government, in which case we’re talking about apples and oranges. However, let’s not beat around the bush, why the hell should the government tell an employer how to run a business and manage his employees. It’s called the free market – something you should read up on when you’re not bulking up on your Marxism. If an employer offer crappy benefits, he will have no employees. At that time, he must adapt or perish. This is why unions are relatively useful as long as they don’t fall to corruption or run the employer into the ground.

Smoke: Avoid smoke on your own. No single person is ever involuntarily exposed to smoke – no matter what they say. It is in fact really that simple.

From what you say, “Progressive” sounds like a nice way of saying “Marxist” without the typical negative connotation. Helping people and taking care of others is a noble and outstanding cause – but the progressive mentality is one of forcing charity – of course that also means that it no longer can be considered charity and must then be considered socialism or Marxism. People don’t like to be forced into charity. It’s basic psychology 101. People don’t like working for nothing. They don’t like being forced into a way of being that is unnatural. Progressives believe that since most people won’t voluntarily give up their lives for the greater good that they must be forced. Ironically, you people fail to realize that the more people are forced into something, the less likely they are to voluntarily be decent people. Hence, the “evil right wing” that you like to talk about.

Love your neighbor. Take care of your neighbor. I will assume that since you’re using a Mao computer that you have chosen a profession that takes care of others in some way. Great. By all means, do it and enjoy doing it. It’s a noble profession and I hope you would do it if you weren’t even paid. The rest of us will keep the wheels of the world turning so that you can continue to do good. All we ask is that you stay the hell out of our way of life.

I believe that we are all fortunate to be born in a society that enables many of us to succeed. When you say “forced charity,” I cringe. I cringe because I see social programs as a way of providing others with an opportunity for success. As far as the smoking ban goes, when the majority of people agree that they want a smoking ban (http://www.channel3000.com/news/15321445/detail.html) — I think it’s a good idea. We have been stuck in the mentality that we ought to promote business-as-usual, but some have begun to notice that there are deep human values — strong family, caring community, healthy environment, safe water and air, and the time to enjoy them all — that are assigned no economic value in unfettered markets. That is why we need restrictions so the market cannot encroach into these areas. So yes, I am calling for the formation and handling of businesses to be subject to the democratic process.
